Atlanta report of activities (August 4)

A weekly summary of recent events dated August 4, 1967. Included are the suspension of protests against a restaurant that refused to serve a black customer, the deployment of plainclothes officers against alleged riots that did not materialize, an altercation between a black officer and black youth that resulted in gunfire, and details of a police officer’s violent beating of Hosea Williams after the latter spoke to two black women who were reportedly being mistreated by the officer. Overall tensions were assessed to be low and the report notes an upcoming peace rally to honor “Hiroshima Day” on August 6.
