FBI Report: Possible Racial Violence Major Urban Areas (June 19)

An FBI report detailing unrest at the Dixie Hills Shopping Center on June 17. The center had a heavy police presence at the request of store owners when Eddie Wilkins was arrested for refusing to leave the premises, allegedly intoxicated. A brief altercation with bystanders protesting the officer’s treatment of Wilkins led to the arrests of two others, including Wilkins’ sister, who would later be released with extensive bruising that she stated was a result of police beating. The next evening, a group including Stokely Carmichael arrived at the center gathered peacefully. Carmichael, allegedly threatening to riot, and five others were arrested for “failure to obey an officer to move on” and later released on bond.
