FBI Report: Possible Racial Violence Major Urban Areas (June 20)

An FBI report detailing civil unrest at the Dixie Hills Shopping Center the night of June 19. A physical altercation between Douglas Richmond, a black man, two police officers, and several bystanders escalated into violence, with Richmond shot in the leg. State Sen. Leroy Johnson and SCLC’s Rev. Joseph Boone urged a protest through legal challenges at a protest meeting at a nearby church that evening, while Stokely Carmichael urged the audience to take direct action and threatened a black detective who had participated in arrests two days prior. A group proceeded to the center, where a confrontation with police led to 10 arrests and warning shots by police, with two officers suffering minor injuries.
