Memo to Mr. Nelson from J.L. Pride regarding an interview with Dr. A.M. Davis – with handwritten notes

An annotated memo from J.L. Pride to Charles Nelson, Director of Field Operations, detailing an interview with Atlanta NAACP President Dr. A.M. Davis. Davis dismissed the Kerner Commission as a waste of time and a way for the government to avoid having to take any concrete action. Stating that a legislative solution within the state of Georgia was impossible, as the system was designed to exclude and harm black citizens, Davis advocated that authority and funds be taken from the Atlanta government and given to the Federal government instead. In addition to expressing dissatisfaction with the public housing projects, he viewed the disorders as legitimate expressions of discontent with an oppressive police force and racial caste system.
