Atlanta report of activities (August 11)

A weekly summary of recent events dated August 11, 1967. Included are the scheduling of a hearing for the police officer accused of brutalizing Hosea Williams, false rumors of planned civil unrest, a peace rally in honor of “Hiroshima Day,” and an interracial peace rally led by Dick Gregory. Reports of recent violence include two black youths being violently beaten by a mob of at least a dozen white teenagers, and of another black youth being shot by an off-duty black officer during a fight. The summary includes an assessment of the ramifications of violent incidents as well as a warning of Governor Maddox’s inflammatory and extremist tendencies.
